Portrait de la jeune fille en feu
Céline Sciamma
In 1770, Marianne is commissioned to paint Héloïse’s wedding portrait. Héloïse refuses to pose, so the painter pretends to be her companion and observes her in secret. Looking becomes the beginning of a love affair.
Why it belongs here
Who looks, who poses, and who chooses the image that will remain? The portrait begins as something imposed on Héloïse. That makes the changing relationship between painter and subject a useful starting point for thinking about desire and agency.
Choose it for
A deliberately paced romantic film in which attention and exchanged looks matter. This is a different evening from a fast-moving romantic comedy: leave room for the pauses and for the relationship to take shape.
After watching
At what point does looking stop being a one-way relationship? Consider how the commission frames the first encounter, then what changes when the person being observed claims a place in it.
