Does the couple take up all the space?

Friends seen between appointments. Accounts we avoid discussing. Families built differently. Two books and a podcast open the conversation.

A couple can be a wish, a refuge or a project. It can also become the preselected answer to the question of whom to build a life with. Three works extend the discussion beyond romantic feelings. Begin with whichever question concerns you; the order is optional. We draw on official presentations, not full reading or listening reviews.

Follow the works in whichever order you prefer.

01 · Nos puissantes amitiés

A room for friends, a plan for later?

Alice Raybaud investigates living, making family and growing old with friends. La Découverte describes interviews, cultural references and social-science research. The movement from affection to plans interests us: whom would you move away with, or discuss growing old with? Making room might begin with regular meetings, visits or sharing a home. The other person may want something different. Friendship need not become a new obligation.

02 · Le couple et l’argent

We share a life. What about the rest?

Titiou Lecoq examines economic inequalities between women and men and how couples can extend them. L’Iconoclaste also describes domestic work and attitudes to money. Behind the question of whom we live with are material arrangements: who pays, has time or can interrupt work? What does discussing expenses leave aside? Does organising daily life enter the conversation? This is a reading prompt, not a diagnosis or financial advice. The book’s frame does not cover every configuration of a couple.

03 · Quouïr

Who gets to make a family?

Rozenn Le Carboulec’s series gives LGBTQI+ people space to speak. Early seasons concern coming out and same-sex parenting; Au Nom du fils revisits the effects of a homophobic upbringing through one history and family voices. These accounts leave room for individual lives; they do not illustrate an ideal replacement family model. Choose the season and read the episode presentation. Coming out, wanting children and family rejection involve different subjects and tones.

We split the rent. Who does the rest?

Friendship and chosen family
