NUIT · Feature

Desire without instructions.

Books and a film to question what we expect from sexuality, other people and ourselves.

What should a successful sex life look like? The question already contains an expectation. Two essays and a fictional film allow us to examine norms, masculinity and looking. Enter through a question and keep what speaks to you. These introductions draw on official presentations, not full reviews.

01 · Au-delà de la pénétration

Who wrote the script?

Martin Page questions the place given to penetration and the gender norms surrounding it; Le Nouvel Attila’s presentation also includes testimony. Which expectations did you inherit without really choosing them? The book takes a position. You can examine its argument without making it a new rule to follow. It is an engaged essay, not a survey of all sexualities.

02 · La volonté de changer

Must you always measure up?

bell hooks connects masculine ideals with men’s emotional lives. Divergences mentions fear of intimacy and expectations of sexual performance. Desire can also be discussed through roles: having to take the initiative, hide hesitation or know what to want. These are discussion prompts from NUIT. A feminist essay centred on masculinities cannot represent every experience.

03 · Portrait de la jeune fille en feu

Who is looking at whom?

Marianne must paint Héloïse’s wedding portrait while Héloïse refuses to pose. Presenting herself as a companion, the painter watches her secretly. Fiction moves the question towards looking: who decides the image, and who can return another person’s gaze? That is our connection with the essays. A story set in 1770 is not a relationship model to copy.

A question to keep

Which expectation would you leave behind?

You can keep this to yourself or discuss it. NUIT does not collect an answer here.

Does the couple take up all the space?

Friends seen between appointments. Accounts we avoid discussing. Families built differently. Two books and a podcast open the conversation.
